Museum café at the Museum of Communication in Frankfurt

The redesign of the café counter at the Museum of Communication in Frankfurt shows how architecture, design, and material innovations can work together harmoniously. With its postmodern, deconstructivist design by Günter Behnisch, the museum itself is considered a standalone work of art. The new counter replaces the previous wooden structure and blends seamlessly into the existing architecture. At the same time, it offers a sustainable, durable solution and picks up on the colorful color scheme of the museum café with its bright yellow “Banana” color. The color reinforces the communicative character of the place and makes a real statement in the museum. The implementation presented particular challenges, as structural changes in the listed building are only possible under strict conditions. Designer Knut Völzke chose the solid surface material Hi Macs from LX Hausys, which allows for seamless and flexible processing.
The counter was manufactured in individual components so that they could then be seamlessly fused together. The result looks like a single piece, retains its original shape, and at the same time offers a durable and repair-friendly solution. The material enables long-term use: if repairs are necessary, they can be carried out with little effort without compromising the aesthetics of the counter. At the same time, the previously time-consuming approval process for replacing components is no longer necessary. The new color scheme not only reinforces the café's colorful design concept, but also adds a visual highlight to the museum. The counter blends harmoniously into the existing room concept, offers a modern, sustainable solution for the business, and permanently enriches the atmosphere of the museum café.
