Reinhard Ernst Museum
After 5 years of construction, the Reinhard Ernst Museum opened its doors on 23.06.2024. Since that time, it has enabled the public to engage with the impressive collection of abstract art. Numerous works by renowned artists can be admired under the motto “Art is for everyone”. Founder Reinhard Ernst is particularly committed to supporting the artistic education of children. For this reason, children and young people up to the age of 18 are admitted free of charge. Just like the colorful collection inside, the museum building itself is a true work of art. Fumihiko Maki, a close friend of Reinhard Ernst, worked together with the owner to create a design that both responds to the art collection and attracts attention as a sculptural body at Wilhelmstrasse 1.
In traditional Japanese style, there is an inner courtyard in the center of the museum, which is home to a sculpture by Eduardo Chillida and a 60-year-old fan maple tree. Generous window fronts up to 6 meters high connect the building with the city outside. The volume of the building also deliberately takes up and continues the lines of the surrounding buildings. The structure of the museum is made up of 4 cuboids, which form the large exhibition rooms. The bright inner courtyard connects these rooms and is a constant point of reference for visitors. It also provides the rooms with daylight and makes the interior of the building appear open and transparent.
