Lighting Installation at Terminal 3
of Frankfurt International Airport

Frankfurt Airport’s new Terminal 3 is a true landmark project in the Rhine-Main metropolitan region. Designed and planned by Mäckler Architekten, this large-scale project perfectly reflects a visual design language that is both aesthetically remarkable and functionally ingenious. The concept, named “Growing Beatle,” provides the framework for the spatial structure of the new airport section.
The expansive lighting installation, which follows this concept, presents itself in the same way. Based on a design by Licht Kunst Licht AG, 60 illuminated poles were manufactured and installed by the Italian manufacturing company Castaldi Lighting. Visible even from a distance, these light sculptures stand 7 meters tall and illuminate the walkway in front of the terminal’s departure hall.  The minimalist, vertical design complements the simple structure of the glass building and marks the entrance area. At the same time, it draws a dividing line between the terminal and the connecting infrastructure, including parking garages and the Skytrain.
The design of the light source, which appears simple at first glance, reveals a great deal of technical sophistication upon closer inspection. A special reflector was developed to provide consistent lighting that prevents glare for passengers. A custom mold was created to manufacture this reflector, a process that demanded great technical precision due to its size and complex structure. As a result, the 60 poles have a powerful presence and form a majestic guard of honor for arriving passengers as they approach the terminal. The lighting installation is not only a guide visible from a distance but also embodies an airport concept that welcomes passengers with the greatest comfort and elegance.
