Kaffeemacher:innen Railway station café at SBB Basel

In the heart of Basel SBB railway station, at the southern entrance to Gundelingen, the new café run by Kaffeemacher:innen opened on September 3, 2025. Following its successful renovation, it now offers space on two floors to enjoy excellent specialty coffees. The entire design, concept, and construction were carried out by the coffee makers themselves, impressively reflecting their hands-on mentality and love of craftsmanship. The café combines functionality with a feel-good atmosphere. While the lower area focuses on efficient order processing for walk-in customers, the gallery, accessible via a wooden staircase, invites guests to linger and enjoy the precisely prepared coffee specialties. The offering is complemented by the sale of coffee accessories and freshly roasted specialty coffees. A special highlight is the free workshop program, which takes place every Wednesday and makes the knowledge transfer of the company's own coffee academy available. This makes the café not only a place of enjoyment, but also a meeting place for coffee lovers and those eager to learn.

The decision to use an entirely wooden structure creates a warm, inviting atmosphere, underscores the sustainable approach of the project, and also contributed to cost optimization. Innovative thinking was also applied to the catering equipment. Instead of one large catering machine, three individual espresso machines for domestic use are used. These enable efficient working and can be used flexibly according to peak times. The simple interior combines reused furniture with real coffee trees and gives the light wood construction room to unfold its full effect. The new café perfectly reflects the values of the Kaffeemacher:innen. It stands for sustainable coffee enjoyment of the highest quality, well-thought-out concepts along the entire value chain, and a clear focus on people, whether through knowledge transfer or by creating a feel-good place in the vibrant station environment.
